Small Business Saturday UK: Lajina Masala

In honour of Small Business Saturday this weekend, we have been speaking to our producers about their unique small businesses, and what being a small business owner means to them. Here we have Lajina Masala, the 'curry queen' of Shropshire, and an integral part of the Shropshire foodie scene:

Small Business Saturday 2017 UK

How long have you been running your business?

4 years

How did Lajina Masala  start?

I was being made redundant from an  accountancy post and my friends thought this is what I should do, we were sitting in an Indian restaurant at the time.

Describe Lajina Masala for us?

I teach Indian cooking and design the classes around you.

There are 6 blends of handmade spices, curry masala, cardamom kick, garam masala, chaat masala, chef crush and a tandoori blend.

What are the challenges in running a small business?

I LOVE, LOVE my business and struggle with the volume of paperwork

With all that you have achieved so far in your business, what are you most proud of?

Clearly, I am the Spice Girl that's stood the test of time, the Original Spice Girl.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting up their own business?

Keep costs low, build your reputation, understand what you offer, don't cut corners and always remember your goals.

What are your plans for your business in the future?

Focus on teaching/spicing and enjoy this incredible opportunity I have.

What do you love most about running your small business?

The people I have met, inspirational, supportive, the greatest friends and I am never short of a "washer upper"

With Christmas just around the corner, tell us why we should be buying from Lajina Masala?

The spices are handmade and created for modern day living, simple to use and full of Indian flavours, buy them from my online shop. www.lajinamasala.com from £2.99 or £15 for all 6.

I have spaces on my workshops, Sat 31st March or 28th April £99 per person where we cook lunch, a take out, includes spices, ingredients and an e-book at Little Wenlock Village Hall, by the Wrekin in Shropshire.

An extra special offer of a private cooking lesson where you buy the ingredients and I bring my spices for £150 plus travel expenses.
