Small Business Saturday UK: Anne Reeves

In honour of Small Business Saturday UK on Saturday 2nd December, we have been speaking to the small businesses that we have the honour of working with. Here we have Anne Reeves of Anne Reeves Jewellery:

How long have you been running your jewellery business?

I set up my business 13 years ago.

How did Anne Reeves Jewellery start?

I attended a couple of short silver jewellery making courses locally (westhope college) and initially, my interest in silversmithing started as a hobby.  Before I had my children, I was a sales rep for a local stationery company - a difficult and demanding job to with a young family - so after a career break when the boys were born, I decided to turn my jewellery making into a small business, which I felt would allow me to earn a living, whilst being flexible enough for me to juggle it with being a mum, achieving a work/life balance.

Describe Anne Reeves Jewellery for us?

I design and create a range of contemporary handcrafted solid sterling silver jewellery.  My designs are inspired by nature, but I also like using abstract shapes and interesting textures to create unique designs.  I sell some work locally, but most pieces are bought online, or via one of our nationwide stockists.

What are the challenges in running a small business?

I always find it difficult to juggle all the various jobs that I need to do to run my business.  I am lucky to have my wonderful assistant, Kate, who takes care of all of the administration which can be overwhelming! Printing off orders, polishing, packing, keeping our website up to date and dealing with customer enquiries etc. This helps me to concentrate on designing and making the jewellery.  I have also learned over the years to outsource as much work as I can such as accounting, marketing, casting etc, so we can concentrate on the jewellery.

With all that you have achieved so far in your business, what are you most proud of?

I’m proud of how far we’ve come in 13 Years! What started as a hobby has developed into a thriving business which is now well known and well respected in the industry.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting up their own business?

Do it! I’ve never regretted my decision to leave a safe, corporate job to pursue my dream. Even when it gets stressful, which it does at times, Christmas particularly, it is still lovely to do something I feel passionate about.  When I see someone wearing my jewellery, I still get really excited!

What are your plans for Anne Reeves Jewellery in the future?

In 2018, we aim to increase our number of stockist nationwide.  Although selling online has been very successful for us, there are still customers who would be prefer to see the jewellery first hand before purchasing, feel the weight of a piece, see the scale and maybe try it on. Increasing our stockists would make my work more accessible to of these potential customers.

Do you have a favourite product that you sell?

I’m very proud of the Bouquet collection, which was launched earlier this year.  Each tiny flower was painstakingly cut by me with my piercing saw to make the masters for that collection, so it’s a real labour of love! It’s also the bestseller in our shops, I think because its delicate design can be truly appreciated ‘in the flesh’ so to speak!

With Christmas just around the corner, tell us why we should be buying Anne Reeves Jewellery?

Our jewellery in high quality, hand crafted and well priced.  It makes a perfect gift for anyone of any age. It is all beautifully finished and packaged in our branded gift boxes with a business card and complimentary polishing cloth, so makes an ideal gift – we’ll even gift wrap it for free for you!

Apart from online, where else can we buy your jewellery?

We have a number of stockist nationwide, details of which can be found on our website www.annereevesjewellery.co.uk or give me a call on 07816 880065.
