In the Spotlight: Hollie Childe Art

Our latest guest blog is brought to you by the wonderful Hollie Childe Art, talking about her amazing summer of fantastic shows all around the country!

___________

One year ago I set up my very first little Hollie Childe Art stall at a Charity Horse Show. Fast forward a year, and I have had the most incredible summer taking Hollie Childe Art around the country exhibiting a range of events and country shows! From really wonderful small local shows, such as Chorley Show, all the way down to Blenheim Palace to exhibit as a craft hero at Countryfile Live.

I began the summer at Shrewsbury Food Festival where the warmth and kindness from the organisers and customers overwhelmed me. The event was a fantastic showcase of all that Shropshire has to offer. During the event my original artwork ‘Hen Party’ found a new home others and I was able to meet Shrewsbury based ‘The Book Matchmaker’ who I am now collaborating with for their autumn gift boxes (and eat a whole host of delicious food and cocktails from Gun Dog Gin!).

Next stop - Newport show! A huge influence for my work is my family's history as cattle farmers in Underton, Shropshire. Looking through old photographs of my Granddad’s prize winning cattle first sparked my interest to begin painting cattle. Therefore, I was extremely excited to exhibit at Newport Show where I was able to photograph many of the cattle on show and speak to many farmers themselves. This is really important to my work to ensure that I find out as much as I can about the animals I paint. The show was a great success and continuing the cow theme - my limited prints of my diary cows ‘Here Come the Girls’ were a sell out!

Onto the big one, eekk! I was delighted to have been selected to exhibit at Countryfile Live where I was located in the ‘Craft Heroes Marquee’. The craft heroes ethos was to celebrate craftsmanship and the opportunity to meet and buy directly from the maker. With the help of wonderful Shropshire based Print Design Services, I was able to develop some exciting new products to launch at the event including china mugs, coasters and wine bottle toppers. These were really popular and the bottle toppers were the perfect excuse to pop open a bottle of prosecco ‘for display purposes’!

The footfall for the show was huge and it was great to see such a large turn out of people there to experience and learn more about British farming and to support all of the small businesses in the crafts and food villages. During the show I did live demonstrations at my stand of my painting techniques as I worked on painting a rare breed calf. With my stand set up I was also able to display many of my original paintings and my Highland Cow ‘Hamish’ caught a lot of attention!

I then headed home to glorious Shropshire to the Chorley Show. Though we were unfortunate with some unexpected wind and rain (causing my gazebo to take off!), the spirit didn’t fade and the local community stepped up in Shropshire spirit to support the show, despite the weather! It is this spirit that makes attending shows a great job and so much fun to attend.

For my final show of the summer I headed to the Peak District for Chatsworth Country Fair. The mornings began with watching hot air balloons rise, to Royal Air Force shows in the afternoon to seeing my favourite celebrity chefs such as Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood! I had a huge space to play with to create my own Hollie Childe Art shop with a huge range of products on display from brand new original acrylic paintings to placemats and magnets.  I was also a proud sponsor of the Family Dog Show where I donated a prize of a custom pet portrait, I was delighted to meet the winner who was a handsome Dalmatian. Over all of the shows I have had the pleasure of meeting all kinds of dogs that I have been able to discuss and take bookings for pet portraits.

Looking forward - I am now onto preparing for my Christmas shows where I will be at many brilliant Shropshire events such as Shrewsbury Winter Festival and Dudmaston Christmas Fair as well as heading up north to Harrogate for the Country Living Magazine Christmas Fair! Over the coming weeks I will be busy working on my festive product designs, 2018 calendar and painting some wonderful pet portraits!

I feel incredibly lucky to have been able attend such great events and spread my work inspired by my Shropshire upbringing around the country. Customers have been fantastic. I've been all over the country and at every event and they have all been so lovely and have made it so much fun! For myself, and all small business owners, every single sale made (no matter how small) is so appreciated along with all the supportive and interesting conversations. I have met so many fellow traders who showcase how much talent and innovation there is to be celebrated. For each person who buys even a card or offers words of encouragement to them, they help to support a dream and help to strengthen the community of talented makers. For all of the weeks of preparation, extremely early mornings, hours out in the rain for traders – it is all made worth it by the support offered by the public to continue to show up and support small business and to buy locally!
